Q: What are "print ready files"? A: Print Ready Files are files that are of high enough quality for us to print from. If you submit a file that isn't print ready, it will appear blurry or pixelated when printed. Files that are at least 300 dpi and have 1/8" bleeds are print ready.
Q: What are bleeds? A: The very edges of the document are called the bleed area. To prevent an unwanted white border from showing at the edge of your document, be sure to extend any background colors or design elements all the way to the edge.
Q: What file format should I submit my art in? A: PDF is the best format. We can also use jpg, tiff, psd, ai, eps and indd files.
Q: Can I submit Word or Publisher files? A: Yes. But please make sure you also submit the files of the fonts you used.
Q: Can I submit InDesign files? A: Yes. If you do, please make sure you send all original linked art and fonts.
Q: InDesign says I have missing links. What does that mean? A: When you import or place an image or a graphic InDesign creates a link in your document. A link displays a graphic on your layout without actually copying the entire graphics file into the InDesign document. This helps keep the page size smaller thus keeping InDesign from lagging and straining over large images. It's a bit like viewing an image on your digital camera. When you view a picture on your digital camera, it appears to be only about an inch to an inch and a half. But when you print out the picture (or view it on your computer), you see that it is a lot larger. Your digital camera creates a smaller preview of your large picture. InDesign also creates a smaller preview of your large picture, and the way that it locates that picture on your computer is by linking to it. Please use our tutorial on how to fix missing links to fix this.
Q: Should my files be CMYK or RGB? A: All files should be CMYK. If you are only able to submit RGB files, that is fine, we have the ability to convert them.
Q: What is CMYK? A: CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) are the colors used in the printing process, whereas RGB (Red, Green and Blue) are the colors used by screen displays such as your monitor.
Q: How do I view a pdf file? A: Download a copy of Adobe Reader, it's free!
Q: What type of design software do you offer? A: We supply our schools with either a copy of Yearbook Fusion or Comic Life.
Q: What if I need help learning the software? A: Contact us and we will be happy to have a designer walk you through how to use the software.
Q: How do I submit files to you? A: You should have received a username and password after the kick off meeting. You can use the Members Login and upload the files there. If you did not receive a username and password, please contact us and ask for one. If the file is smaller than 10MB you can email it as an attachment. You may also mail us a burned disc of the files to our address listed here.
